Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or rTMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses repetitive magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression.
During a TMS session, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp. The electromagnet pulse stimulates nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and depression. TMS is an option for those who have tried antidepressants, but the antidepressants have stopped providing effective relief.
Targeted magnetic fields are used to stimulate a specific area in the brain that is associated with depression. rTMS technology is similar to the technology used in MRIs.
TMS is covered by most insurance providers including Medicare. Prior authorization is typically required for insurance coverage. Our clinic will manage this process.
The magnetic coil which delivers TMS is positioned on the head. You will hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head when the magnetic pulses are delivered. Many patients watch television or read during treatment.
TMS is FDA approved treatment, and has over two decades of clinical and scientific research supporting its safe use and application. TMS therapy has been recommended by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) since 2010 for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder.
TMS treatment is usually administered over a 6-week period, 5 times per week. Each treatment is typically between 3 and 37.5 minutes depending on what the physician determines to be best for you. If the need arises, we can work with a schedule that fits with your needs.
